ABSTRAK

This research is intended to study the distribution and abundance of macroinvertebrate the

existence of which could be predicted to reflect water quality of Batanghari Metro river, due to

disposal of industrial, domestic, farm and tourism wastes. The research was carried out in Batanghari

river, consisting of 5 observation station. The samples were taken on June 2008. The data was

collected using surber sampler as plot quadrate. Sampling points were determined using niche pool

and riffle. Macroinvertebrate samples were identified qualitatively and quantitatively, and then

analyzed using abundance, diversity, dominance, biotic score, water quality index approach and

physical-chemical parameters specified.

The research found 25 macroinvertebrate and three types of polychaeta that were unevenly

spread. From the analysis result on physical-chemical parameters, (pH, temperature, muddiness, DO,

BOD, COD, organic substances) the water quality from Batanghari river especially that was collected

in the estuary of waste disposal has exceeded the threshold. Macroinvertebrate analysis showed high

diversity and biotic score for slightly polluted water. On the other hand, the polluted water showed

high dominance index with low diversity and biotic score.

From the summary of macroinvertebrate analysis and physical-chemical parameters it was

concluded that water quality of Batanghari river from the first station was slightly polluted (Odonata,

Coleoptera, Tricoptera, Lepidoptera, Gastrotricha, Gastropoda, Crustacea); station 2 was polluted

(Gastropoda, Syrpidae, Crustacea, Hemiptera, Diptera, Oligochaeta,); station 3 a little heavier polluted

(Syrpidae, Crustacea, Hemiptera, Diptera, Oligochaeta); station 4 was heavily polluted (Syrpidae,

Hemiptera, Diptera, Oligochaeta) and station 5 polluted (Diptera, Oligochaeta, Crustacea,

Megaloptera, Coleoptera, Gastropoda, Dividae, Mollusca, Ampullaridae). The water quality of

Batanghari river determined the distribution and abundance of macroinvertebrate supported by their

habitat, so that they can be used to predict pollution level in the river more thoroughly.
